00:00as early as 1928 the communists declared
00:03that the racial differences among our
00:05people
00:06constituted the weakest and most
00:08vulnerable point in our social fabric
01:06you see they claim to be practicing
01:08something called scientific marxism and
01:12so they have to dress up these crude
01:13concepts in elaborate phraseology
01:16for instance when the communists speak
01:18of violent revolution they describe it
01:21as a war of national liberation
01:25now the so-called theory behind this is
01:28that the people of the country marked
01:29for takeover supposedly are an oppressed
01:32people they're dominated by an
01:34imperialistic foreign power that has
01:36colonized them and exploited them
01:38and so the communists claim that it's
01:40their duty their historic duty to
01:43liberate them from the yoke of fascism
01:45or imperialism or colonialism
01:48or whatever
01:50but there are other phrases also used to
01:53describe the same process
01:55occasionally they'll refer to this
01:57violent type of revolution as an
01:59anti-imperialist war or an
02:01anti-colonialist war but they all equal
02:03the same thing
02:05wars of national liberation
02:07anti-imperialist wars and
02:09anti-colonialist wars
02:11are all phrases used to describe that
02:13aspect of communist revolution aimed at
02:15overthrowing the government by means of
02:18force and violence
02:20to describe their non-violent revolution
02:23the communists most often use the term
02:25proletarian revolution
02:28but they also refer to it as the
02:30socialist revolution and sometimes as
02:33the anti-monopoly struggle but here
02:36again they all add up to the same thing
02:38the proletarian revolution the socialist
02:41revolution and the anti-monopoly
02:43struggle
02:44are all merely different ways in which
02:46the communists describe their strategy
02:48for overthrowing the government through
02:51non-violent means
02:53well all right having defined some of
02:55the key phrases we can return now to the
02:58communist literature and be able to
03:00understand what they mean when they use
03:02these words now in 1960 the
03:06representatives from communist parties
03:08all over the world gathered in moscow
03:10and issued a joint declaration which
03:12included this statement
03:15our time whose main content is the
03:17transition of capitalism to socialism is
03:20a time of socialist revolutions and
03:23national liberation revolutions
03:26in other words simply stated we're
03:28living in an era of two kinds of
03:30revolution one violent and the other
03:33non-violent
03:35now here's a document published by the
03:37communist party in this country in
03:38nineteen sixty eight it's entitled the
03:41new program of the communist party usa a
03:44second draft
03:45and on the subject here's what it says
03:49contemporary revolutions bear two
03:51distinctive marks they are socialist
03:54they are anti-imperialist
03:56more than a billion human beings are now
03:58embarked on socialist revolution
04:01a larger number is in varying stages of
04:04revolution for
04:05national liberation
04:09as early as 1928 the communist declared
04:12that the racial differences among our
04:14people
04:15constituted the weakest and most
04:17vulnerable point in our social fabric
04:20by constantly probing and straining at
04:22this one spot
04:23they calculated that eventually the
04:25cloth could be torn apart and that
04:27americans could be divided weakened and
04:30perhaps even set against each other in
04:31open combat
04:33now here is a book that i think ought to
04:36be in every home library it's entitled
04:39color communism and common sense by
04:42manning johnson
04:43now as you can see from his photograph
04:46manning johnson was a negro
04:48he was also a member of the communist
04:50party
04:51he joined the party as a young man
04:53because he honestly believed that the
04:55communists were trying to improve the
04:57conditions of his people
04:59he was a dedicated communist and
05:01eventually he rose to one of the highest
05:03ranks he was appointed to the national
05:05negro commission of the communist party
05:08usa
05:09but after many years manning johnson
05:12finally came to the realization that the
05:14communists weren't the least bit
05:15interested in improving the conditions
05:17of the negro people
05:19he discovered that instead they were
05:21merely planning to use his people and
05:23these are his words to use them as
05:26cannon fodder in a bloody revolution to
05:29destroy america
05:30and when he woke up to this
05:32he dropped out of the party and devoted
05:34the rest of his life trying to alert his
05:36fellow citizens of all races to the true
05:39nature of the communist party as he knew
05:41it to be from the inside
05:43and this book contains much of that
05:45story
05:47i wish i had the time to examine the
05:48entire volume with you page by page but
05:51here at least
05:52is one short quotation that pertains to
05:55the immediate topic
05:56manning johnson said
05:59black rebellion was what moscow wanted
06:02bloody racial conflict would split
06:05america
06:06during the confusion demoralization and
06:09panic would set in then finally the reds
06:11say
06:12now at this point he quotes verbatim
06:14from a communist directive that he
06:16studied while inside the party
06:19workers stop work many of them seize
06:21arms by attacking arsenal's street
06:23fights become frequent under the
06:25leadership of the communist party the
06:27workers organize revolutionary
06:29committees to be in command of the
06:30uprising
06:32armed workers seize the principal
06:34government offices invade the residences
06:36of the president and his cabinet members
06:38arrest them declare the old regime
06:40abolished establish their own power
06:46now here is a piece of vicious communist
06:49propaganda that perhaps some of you have
06:51seen it's called the crusader
06:53it's published periodically in red china
06:56and is widely circulated through the
06:57negro communities here in america
07:00it's written by robert f williams one of
07:03the organizers of the revolutionary
07:05action movement better known as ram
07:08williams also was the president of the
07:10local chapter of the naacp in monroe
07:13north carolina
07:14at that time needless to say he wasn't
07:17telling very many people that he was
07:18also a member of the communist party
07:21now one day back in 1961 he decided to
07:24start a small war of national liberation
07:28of his own apparently he was too
07:29impatient to wait for the big signal so
07:32finally to avoid prosecution for assault
07:34with a deadly weapon and for kidnapping
07:37he fled to cuba and then to read china
07:40where he now writes communist propaganda
07:43one other thing you should know about
07:44robert williams is that recently he was
07:47elected by members of snick core ram the
07:50naacp and similar groups as the
07:53president in exile of something called
07:55the republic of new africa following the
07:58communist line in every detail
08:00these men claim that they're the
08:02representatives of a new government and
08:04a new nation within the continental
08:06borders of the united states
08:08they issued a demand to the state
08:09department that a large segment of land
08:12be turned over to them as their rightful
08:14territory
08:16the proclamation said that they're now
08:18prepared to negotiate in good faith the
08:21peaceful transfer to them of the
08:23southern portion of the united states
08:25the implication being of course that if
08:27they don't get it peacefully then
08:29they'll just have to take it by force
08:31and violence
08:33already the republic of new africa has
08:35established a central headquarters in
08:37mississippi and its leaders in the north
08:41are actively recruiting a black panther
08:43guerrilla force and what they call a
08:46revolutionary freedom corps the rfc
08:49from among black militant students to
08:52act as organizers and to set up local
08:55provisional governments as they call
08:57them in the so-called ghetto areas
09:00but the reason i've mentioned all this
09:02is merely to introduce properly one
09:04robert f williams the president in exile
09:07of this republic of new africa and the
09:09author of the crusader
09:12now here is what robert williams says
09:17the lifeblood of u s capitalism is its
09:20productive capacity and its extensive
09:22commerce
09:23if these two factors were to become
09:25paralyzed and rendered sterile the
09:27orderly function of the government
09:29establishment would degenerate into a
09:31state of chaos and the superstructure of
09:34the system would collapse the more
09:36automated a society is the more
09:38vulnerable it is to forces of calamity
09:41what would highly mechanized america be
09:43without electrical power what would it
09:46be without modern transportation what
09:48would it be without its industrial
09:50capacity
09:51and then having asked these questions
09:53robert williams proceeds to explain in
09:56minute detail exactly how to manufacture
09:59the devices that can be used by a mere
10:01handful of people to ensure that highly
10:04automated america will lose its
10:05electrical power its modern
10:07transportation and its industrial
10:10capacity
10:11i can assure you ladies and gentlemen
10:13that less than a dozen people if they
10:16know what they're doing
10:17can reduce any of our major cities into
10:20a helpless seething massive confusion
10:23panic and death
10:24just one person
10:26one person can poison the city's entire
10:29water supply
10:30or destroy the main aqueduct or blow up
10:32the principal pumping stations
10:35and where would people in los angeles
10:36for instance get a drink of water if it
10:38didn't come out of a pipe
10:41and how long can a human being survive
10:42without water
10:44four or five days perhaps
10:46long before that there'd be tens of
10:49thousands of people dead in our cities
10:51not from thirst but because they were
10:53unable to defend what water they had
10:55from roving bands of desperate people
10:57who were dying of thirst
11:00and that's thinking only of the loss of
11:02water
11:03in your mind's eye compound that with no
11:06food no electricity no way to dispose of
11:09sewage no police protection no water
11:12pressure to fight fires no radio or tv
11:14no telephone no buses no gasoline for
11:17your car no way to escape no place to go
11:20if you could
11:21don't think for a minute that the
11:23countryside would be immune from
11:24disaster either
11:26in this issue of the crusader the
11:28communist call not only for extensive
11:30chaos within the cities
11:32but for putting to the torch every
11:34village every forest every field and
11:36every barn
11:38the plan is for raging fires from one
11:40city to the next the reason
11:43well
11:44first there's the value of sheer
11:45destruction
11:46secondly it would force us to deploy our
11:49defenses and rescue units over the
11:51widest possible area the communists
11:53point out that as long as our police and
11:56national guard remain concentrated
11:58they're invincible
12:00but if they can be forced to spread out
12:02over the entire city and into the
12:04countryside as well
12:05then they can be picked off from ambush
12:07one by one
12:09and the third value of massive fire to
12:11the communists is psychological
12:14the average american may say soft and
12:17decadent when he sees billows of black
12:19smoke rising from one horizon to the
12:22other when at night the only light he
12:24has to see by is the flickering red from
12:26flames leaping into the sky he'll become
12:29paralyzed with fear and panic he'll run
12:31away and hide and do nothing to
12:33interfere with the guerrilla bands as
12:35they strike at the community's power
12:37centers
12:38if we fail to note
12:40that the communist blueprint calls also
12:43for white retaliation and violence in
12:46the black communities it's a very
12:48important objective for the communist
12:50party
12:51so far
12:52they've only been able to involve a
12:54small percentage of our negro people in
12:56this war of national liberation the
12:58great majority want no part of it in any
13:00form
13:01but the one sure way to change that
13:03is to have white vigilante groups
13:06striking into the negro sections
13:08supposedly to seek revenge
13:11we mustn't get ourselves into thinking
13:13that the communists have placed their
13:14agitators only into the black
13:16communities they're working both sides
13:18of the street they want hatred violence
13:21and bloodshed between the races and they
13:23don't care how they get it or whom they
13:25use even children if necessary
13:28ladies and gentlemen
13:30the plans and preparations for a
13:33communist revolution of force and
13:34violence are far advanced
13:37the organization behind these
13:39preparations has almost unlimited
13:41financial resources and it provides both
13:44training and leadership
13:45based upon years of experience in many
13:48other countries
13:49our enemies are deadly serious about
13:51their task
13:53and it's nothing short of national
13:54suicide for us to continue to ignore
13:57their plans and their progress
14:00the strategy of the proletarian
14:03revolution calls for the quiet
14:05conversion of our government into a
14:07communist regime
14:09but under the banner of socialism
14:12well what is socialism all right let's
14:14define it according to the dictionary
14:17socialism is a political concept based
14:20upon the principle of government
14:22ownership and control
14:23of property the means of production and
14:26the avenues of commerce
14:28but the important thing as far as this
14:30presentation is concerned is how do the
14:32communists define it and this is where
14:35many people are surprised to learn that
14:37the communists have an entirely
14:38different meaning for the word socialism
14:41than the average american has
14:43did you know that there isn't a single
14:45communist country in existence anywhere
14:47on earth
14:48that's right not one
14:50russia isn't a communist country red
14:52china isn't cuba certainly isn't
14:55these are socialist lands
14:58that's how communist leaders always
15:00describe them
15:02you see according to the teachings of
15:04karl marx communism will come to this
15:06world only in some future utopian era
15:10when men will have learned to live
15:12together in perfect harmony when they'll
15:14no longer be greedy or competitive when
15:17they'll want to share equally with their
15:18fellow human beings and have nothing
15:20better than anyone else
15:22when this comes to pass
15:24there will no longer be any need for
15:26police or for government of any kind
15:29and then he said the state will wither
15:31away
15:32when that happens said marx it will be
15:34communism
15:36in the meantime comrades whenever we
15:38come to power we shall call it socialism
15:42so the next time you hear a communist
15:44spokesman stand before a college
15:46audience or a tv camera and say
15:48innocently that all the communists are
15:50doing here in america is working for
15:52socialism you must understand what he
15:54means by that word what he's really
15:56saying
15:57is all the communists are doing is
16:00trying to bring to america exactly the
16:02same thing they now have in the soviet
16:04union and red china
16:06now they can call that socialism if they
16:08want to but most americans i think would
16:10describe that over there as communism
16:15the
16:16new program of the communist party
16:18on this subject has this to say
16:22the term socialism describes but the
16:24first stage of a new society that in its
16:27full development is called communism
16:30socialism is a transitional stage
16:34well the important question though is
16:36why do the communists promote socialism
16:39is it merely because they honestly
16:40believe that it's a necessary
16:42transitional stage to some higher more
16:45perfect form of society
16:47i don't think so
16:49i doubt very much if the communist
16:51leaders believe their own fairy tale and
16:54i'm sure they're not so naive is to
16:56believe that their present super state
16:58is ever really going to wither away but
17:01they promote socialism just the same
17:03because they know that socialism by
17:06definition
17:07means control over people
17:12if the government owns and controls all
17:14property all means a production and all
17:17avenues of commerce then it controls all
17:20people
17:22if we're dependent upon the government
17:23for our food our clothing our shelter
17:26our jobs
17:27our medical care
17:29then we're far more effectively
17:30controlled by those who hold political
17:32power than if they stood over us with
17:34soldiers and weapons
17:37some years ago
17:38i happened to attend a meeting where
17:40several anti-communist refugees from
17:42behind the iron curtain were called upon
17:44to relate their personal experiences
17:47some of the questions that came from the
17:49audience were rather naive i suppose
17:51because finally one of the refugees
17:53spoke up and he said
17:55you know
17:56you americans have funny ideas about
17:58life under communism
18:00apparently you think there's a communist
18:02soldier standing on every street corner
18:04with a rifle and bayonet to keep the
18:05people in line
18:07but this isn't so
18:08he said oh sure in the beginning there
18:10were plenty of soldiers and executions
18:13and deportations to slave labor camps
18:16but we don't see much of that anymore
18:18the open violence lasted only for about
18:20a year or a year and a half
18:22and then the anti-communist leadership
18:24was liquidated
18:26and now to the casual observers there's
18:29a great deal of apparent calm and
18:31freedom
18:32for instance he said
18:34i lived in the largest city in the
18:35country
18:36we had a large park there directly
18:38across the street from a beautiful
18:40church
18:41he said they left one church open
18:43one in the entire country primarily for
18:46guided tours of visiting americans who
18:48had come to see if religion was being
18:50persecuted
18:51he said anytime i wanted to
18:54i could have gone into that park stood
18:56on a bench and spoken out against
18:58communism
18:59then i could have walked across the
19:00street into that church and knelt down
19:03in prayer and i wouldn't have been
19:04arrested or bothered in any way
19:08but you can be sure i did not do these
19:10things
19:11because if i had
19:13the very next day
19:15the wheels of the bureaucracy would have
19:16begun to turn
19:18and i would have been informed that my
19:19quota of food stamps had been cut that
19:22my allotment for clothing and shoes had
19:23been reduced that my allocation for
19:25living quarters had been downgraded and
19:28finally that my job assignment had been
19:30changed from the kind of work for which
19:32i'd been trained to menial labor at
19:35lower pay
19:36so none of us did any of those things
19:38that we were theoretically entitled to
19:40do
19:41because of the tremendous power
19:44that the communist party had over our
19:46economic existence
19:49and then he said something that i'll
19:50never forget he hesitated for a moment
19:53and weighing his words very carefully so
19:56as not to hurt our feelings he said
19:59you know i came to america
20:01expecting to find a nation of free men
20:05but instead
20:06i find exactly the same thing
20:09everywhere i look i see men and women
20:12who know that communists are making
20:14headway in this country
20:16they know that something must be done
20:18and that someone must stand up to them
20:21but they themselves do nothing
20:24they remain silent
20:26because they're afraid
20:28that if they speak out
20:30or take a stand publicly
20:33it'll be bad for business
20:36they may lose a client
20:38they may even lose their jobs
20:41or perhaps they're receiving a regular
20:44government check and already are too
20:46dependent upon some of the very people
20:48and programs they know they should
20:50oppose
20:52and then he said
20:54these men
20:55voluntarily
20:57have gone behind the iron curtain
21:00they're already taken over by the
21:02communists
21:03the only difference is
21:05that for the present at least
21:07they can still get out anytime they
21:09really want to and we could not
21:13i think there's a great lesson to be
21:15learned from that because
21:16it's true isn't it
21:18there are many men who are physically
21:19brave beyond any question when it comes
21:21to standing up against a tyranny that
21:23threatens with armies
21:25some of them carry the actual scars of
21:27battle to prove it but when it comes to
21:29this new kind of war
21:30they're lost to the fight
21:32when there is no battlefield
21:34when the weapons are not rifles or bombs
21:36but economic pressures
21:39then who is your enemy how do you fight
21:41where do you begin
21:43precisely for these reasons that any
21:46modern dictatorship must have control
21:48over the economic sphere of all human
21:50activity this was true of nazism it was
21:53true of fascism it's true of communism
21:56and it's also true of socialism
21:59regardless of what name we give it
22:01total government control is by
22:04definition
22:05totalitarianism that's what the word
22:07means
22:10now leon trotsky as you recall was one
22:13of the original bolsheviks who led the
22:14communist revolution in russia
22:17in 1937 trotsky wrote a book entitled
22:21the revolution betrayed
22:23and in this book here's what he said
22:28the basis of bureaucratic rule is the
22:30poverty of society in objects of
22:33consumption
22:34when there is enough goods in a store
22:36the purchasers can come whenever they
22:38want to
22:39when there is little goods the
22:41purchasers are compelled to stand in
22:43line
22:44when the lines are very long
22:46it's necessary to appoint a policeman to
22:48keep order
22:50such is the starting point of the power
22:52of the soviet bureaucracy
22:55it knows who is to get something
22:58and who has to wait
23:02and ladies and gentlemen there's no
23:04better description than that of why the
23:06communists work to promote socialism
23:09no matter whose definition you use
23:11under socialism
23:13those who run the government
23:15and the communists are confident that in
23:17america they eventually will be the ones
23:19who do so
23:21those who run the government will know
23:24who is to get something
23:26and who has to wait and that represents
23:28control over human beings
23:33what is all this to do with the
23:34communist revolution in america
23:37well ladies and gentlemen it has
23:39everything to do with it because the
23:41building of socialism is the communist
23:44revolution in america
23:45it represents the process whereby our
23:48country can be moved gradually toward
23:50communism without the people even being
23:53aware of it
23:54no matter what grievance we may have
23:56real or imagined no matter what national
23:58problems we may face the communists
24:01seize upon these as excuses to build
24:04socialism
24:05they have one and only one solution for
24:08all problems
24:09more government more government and then
24:12more and more until its total government
24:17and forgive me for saying it one more
24:19time
24:20total government
24:21is
24:22communism
25:41foreign
