05:49A computer, more or less, is a machine
05:51that performs logical and mathematical processes,
05:53how do you give it words,
05:55that it understands and replies to?
05:57This type of programs that can understand and produce language
05:59is called a Language Model.
06:01It works in a much simpler way than you think.
06:03It doesn't actually understand anything.
06:05All what a language model does,
06:07is that when you give it a sentence, it can predict the next word.
06:09If I wrote "Egypt's capital is..." it'll complete with "Cairo",
06:12or "The sun rises from..." and it'll say "East".
06:15If I wrote "Never gonna..." it'll say "Give you up". Rickrolled.
06:17It takes the sentence and completes it.
06:18Abo Hmeed, how can it do all that?
06:21It seems like a complex process that requires understanding and presence
06:24to know what Egypt's capital is Cairo.
06:26Actually, my friend, no.
06:27It's not complex at all, all you need is a large collection of words
06:31whether from books, Wikipedia, or even twitter,
06:33and make this language model memorize what comes after each word,
06:38and its frequency of occurrence.
06:39That's called training the model,
06:42and after you train it, you give it a phrase to complete
06:45it looks at the last word in the phrase and sees which word would follow,
06:49according to the training it had.
06:50If you trained it on ElDaheeh Wikipedia’s page,
06:53and then wrote "Ahmed" and let it complete, 90% it'll write "El-Ghandour",
06:57because 90% of the times it saw the word "Ahmed",
07:00it was followed by "El-Ghandour".
07:01But if you trained it on "Paranormal" page,
07:04or a article about it, then wrote "Ahmed"
07:07it'll write "Khaled" then "Tawfik".
07:09Same thing happens here.
07:11The model found, in the page it trained on,
07:13the name "Ahmed Khaled Tawfik" repeated,
07:15so it sees what comes after the word you gave it in the source you trained it on.
07:21It counts how many times did each word occur.
07:23It would be hard for it to complete the phrase if it only looks at the last word
07:27because a phrase like "Egypt's capital is..."
07:29its meaning isn't just in "is",
07:31but the context is found in "Egypt's capital",
07:33it's what makes you know the rest of the phrase, not "is".
07:36That's why we make it look at the last two or three words in the phrase
07:39or any number of words,
07:40as long as these words are useful to determine how it will finish the phrase.
07:44Of course, my friend, this is an issue, because there's no constant number of words
07:47that it's supposed to look at.
07:49If the number is too little, it won't understand anything.
07:51If the number is too much, it'll be trained on unnecessary words.
07:53If it's trained on the phrase, "KSA's capital is Riyadh"
07:56and "Egypt's capital is Cairo",
07:58and you made it look at the last 10 words before every word it learns.

08:21Don't be alarmed, they're not real neurals.

08:25wanted to have names that scare us that they stole from biology.

08:29Have the AI finish that one according to where you train it.
08:33Besides the many details that we can elaborate on in another episode,
08:36the neural networks are a form of AI
08:38that take input, get trained, and produce output,
08:41no matter their type.
08:42Any input and any output, it does it all.
08:45The neural networks do that through changing sets of numbers called Parameters.
08:50They take in an input, no matter its type,
08:52and turn it into the thing it's supposed to produce.
08:54If you have many dogs and cats pictures,
08:57you can train these neural networks
08:59through naming each picture and what it contains.
09:02This is a picture of a cat with a cat, that is a picture of a dog with a dog.
09:05Then when you give it a picture that it never saw,
09:07it can tell you the percentage of it being a dog or a cat.
09:10Doesn't this ring any bells?
09:11Instead of training it on pictures of cats and dogs,
09:14we can train it on words,
09:15and make it take a word as input and produce the next word as output.
09:19Or two or three words as input, and it produces the next word.
09:22So forth, and so forth.
09:25One would tell me, it's a nice idea and all but you didn't solve the problem.
09:29We don't know how many words it needs,
09:31to write the next word.
09:32What's nice about neural networks is that it has many forms,
09:35you can arrange this neural network
09:38in different ways to perform different tasks.
09:41The neural networks that differentiate between cats and dogs,
09:44are not the same ones that can finish a phrase,
09:46nor the same ones that can predict stock market prices.
09:49This is so creative that programmers call it
09:52Neural Network Architecture.
09:56It's like designing an apartment or a villa.
09:57There's a group of neural networks
09:59that can take in any number of inputs consecutively.
10:02Any number?... Any number.
10:03And can produce any number of outputs consecutively.
10:05Any number?... Any number.
10:06One of the most important neural networks are the Transformers,
10:09which is represented by the T in ChatGPT.
10:14The rise of Transformers neural networks in 2017,
10:17is considered by many one of the biggest achievements of the 21st century.
10:21That T, the Transformers.
10:23This is because the way they function are the closest to how a brain functions.
10:27Man's actual brain.
10:28Before the transformers, the biggest flaw of neural networks
10:31that take in any phrase with any tool and complete with a certain number of words,
10:35was that they forgot the words they saw at the beginning.
10:37If you gave it a phrase of 10 words,
10:39it would focus on the tenth word more than the first,
10:42and it was a huge problem
10:43because the important information didn't have to be at the end.
10:46Transformers dealt with this in a different way,
10:49they gave each word only a percentage of its attention
10:52according to how important it is in a phrase,
10:54and not to its location in the phrase. It understands.
10:56It's something it learns as it's trained.
10:57This simple idea was a breakthrough on how much neural networks
11:01are capable of simulating our speech.
11:03A year later, in 2018,
11:04Google announced its first Large Language Model using Transformers.
11:08It was called BERT.
11:09The reason why BERT was classified as a Large Language Model
11:12not just a Language Model,
11:14was that its number of parameters was 110 million parameters.
11:18Parameters are the variable factors.
11:20This means that BERT has over 110 million numbers
11:26that it uses to understand the phrase it receives and complete it.
11:30In that same year, the company OpenAI
11:32announced its Large Language Model and called it GPT.
11:38It had 117 million parameters. It's 7 million more.
11:42Since then, and the whole thing blew up.
11:44In 2019, OpenAI announced GPT-2
11:47that has 1.5 billion parameters.
11:50In 2020, Google announced T5, with 11 billion parameters.
11:54In 2020, OpenAI announced GPT-3,
11:58with 175 billion parameters.

12:05What's happening? Is it a bid?
12:06The more parameters there are,
12:08the more simulative the language model is to our speech.
12:11Not just that, there also became different types of these large language models,
12:15OpenAI had InstructGPT, which is similar to GPT, but its trained data

13:29stop being incoherent, and write organized texts that we can use.
13:33The thing about ChatGBT is that after it was trained like any other language model

13:42When each person interacted with it,
13:44and found responses ChatGBT is not supposed to say,

14:17It's trained to finish sentences, and can't do the things you're asking.
